Taliban militants launched a brazen attack on the luxury hotel housing the Australian embassy in Kabul on Monday, killing seven people including a journalist, officials said.

Norwegian journalist Carsten Thomassen, 39, of Dagbladet was hurt in the attack and died while undergoing surgery at a Czech NATO hospital near Kabul airport, the daily said in its online edition.

Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Garh Soere was inside the five-star Serena hotel at the time but was unharmed in the attack, and took shelter with other guests in the basement afterwards, hotel and Norwegian officials said.
